SUBJECT: Saving Energy for Fun and Profit
by Emily Larson Kubiak of Sustainable Connections

Whether you work from home, in a tiny office, or huge warehouse, energy costs can make up a significant portion of business expenses. Fortunately, there are robust resources in your community to help you reduce energy use in your building, while increasing comfort and well-being. Studies show that customers prefer to do business with companies that are working to save energy, and some energy improvements can even help foster happier and more productive workers.

JUNKIES LIKE ME
by Pippa Breakspear
Chemical Dependency Counselor

I’m a recovering alcoholic and opioid addict and a Master’s level Chemical Dependency Counselor. I enjoy sharing my own experience of addiction, recovery and depression and what I have learned from working with many clients over the years. My objective is to normalize addiction (57 million Americans are abusing drugs and alcohol, and that doesn’t include those dealing with food, sex, porn, screens, social media, work and gambling
addiction) demonstrate respect and compassion for those suffering with it, while encouraging accountability and good boundaries. So many people are dealing with this problem, who feel ashamed and embarrassed and therefore don’t seek help. Everyone seems to breathe a sigh of relief when I talk about it openly, normalize it and say “hey, don’t assume you know what a junkie looks like, we look like everyone”.

PROFESSIONAL WOMAN OF THE YEAR GALA & SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER

The PWOTY award is a unique opportunity to engage and support women with varying backgrounds, stories and areas of expertise. Every year, we ask the public to submit nominations to highlight amazing women playing pivotal roles in their business and community. These individuals develop future leaders, mentor our children and peers, and give back in ways that impact us all.

In addition to recognizing several of our community’s truly deserving professional, our annual banquet serves as an incredible opportunity to support students and fellow non-profits. The PWOTY banquet is Whatcom Women in Business’ sole fundraiser, allowing us to grant four scholarships each year to women furthering their education. Additionally, one non-profit is selected annually by membership. Supplemented by member’s donations, funds raised during the banquet allow us to make a generous contribution to their cause.

JUST LIKE THE MEN: A BELLINGHAM FILM
Cassidy Brooks & Stacy Reynolds
Talking to Crows

We’re a female-majority film production company producing a film written by Bellingham local, Ella Higginson, in 1914. The screenplay satirizes her own experience campaigning for another local Bellingham woman, Francis C. Axtell in 1912 resulting in a historic win for women in Washington state. Our presentation discusses the lost legacy of Ella, our adaptation of her original screenplay, and how we intend to make this film successful on local, academic, and mainstream levels.  We wish to connect with the women of WWIB as this film was written, directed, produced, and edited by a team of women that spans over 100 years.
